Herbanext Internship Program: Batch 2013-2014 Specialization Internship

Last June 28, 2014, Herbanext concluded its first ever batch of Pharmacy Specialization Interns from the University of San Agustin – Iloilo. This specialization internship is designed to provide students with more advanced skills and appreciation of medicinal plants. Due to some schedule constraints in October 2013, the internship had to be extended all the way to summer of 2014. By this time, the students have already graduated and obtained their pharmacy degree! The new graduates nevertheless pursued their internship at Herbanext at the expense of their summer vacation. It was disheartening initially to find out that these new pharmacy graduates, who in one way or another will influence the direction of our health system, had very little knowledge and appreciation of medicinal plants. Majority did not even know how to identify important herbs like lagundi, banaba, sambong, and takip kuhol. But after a month’s time, all my fears were replaced with admiration as the interns not only could identify important medicinal herbs but understand as well their active compounds, pharmacological activities, mode of action, dosage, and toxicity. In all, they were able to complete 26 monographs of the most important local herbs, including those for roselle, tawa-tawa, takip kuhol, sinta, and sulasi. With guidance from Herbanext staff, the interns also developed a farm guide for herb identification, a herbal candy, and a seaweed tablet. Thank Batch 2013-2014 Specialization Interns for a job well done! All the best AC, Alyssa, Claire, Joy, Joyce, Karen, Kynth, Lorice, Nat, Noemi, Sheila, Shemar, and Tre to your review for your board exam.
