International Training Workshop on Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms Held at SAAS
In line with Herbanext’s thrust of advancing production and manufacturing technology of Ganoderma lucidum in the Philippines, Herbanext President and concurrent R&D Head Philip S. Cruz recently attended the “International Training Workshop on Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Production Technology” at the prestigious Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS). The comprehensive 13-day training workshop was held from Oct. 31-Nov. 12, 2009 at the SAAS’s Institute of Edible Fungi and Medicinal Mushrooms (IEF). The IEF is a high level research institute in China specializing in the research and development of edible/medicinal mushrooms and technical extension, including the breeding of mushroom strains, cultivation technology, mushroom biotechnology, development and processing of mushroom products, collection and conservation of mushroom germplasm, and the supervision and testing of mushroom quality.

HERBANEXT IS THE BRAINCHILD OF TOYM awardee,
scientist-agriculturist Philip Cruz whose personal interest with the healing
potentials of mushrooms, particularly the ganoderma lucidum variety (a polypore
mushroom found growing on dead logs in the deepest forests in China), paved the
way for the company’s pioneering product, Ganomax R. Together with his
colleague, Integrative Medicine physician, Dr. Regio Sales, Herbanext later
produced other medications that form the Gano Defense System: Ganomax 5,
Glucogan (for blood circulation), Flamagan (for the control of
inflammation/arthritis), Ganogest (for controlling ulcer and digestion problems)
and Hepagan (for liver support).
Inspectors from the the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA), formerly Bureau of Food and Drug, recently completed a 2-day Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) audit of the Herbanext Plant in Bago City, Negros Occidental. Herbanext is presently the only GMP-certified Food Supplement Manufacturer by FDA in Western Visayas region out of around a dozen companies. GMP certification is the highest standard on food safety and quality that FDA awards to food supplement manufacturers in the country. It requires strict documentation and traceability of all aspects of manufacturing operations, including the sourcing of raw materials. FDA inspectors also visited the company's Ganoderma ludicum farm and organic herb farm as part of its traceablity assessment. Herbanext will now be on its second year of GMP certification and is also looking forward to obtaining its Halal certification soon.

Philippine Science High School (Iloilo) SSIP 2009
Last April 22-May 8, 2009, Herbanext accepted for the first time 11 students
for the Philippine Science High School Iloilo Campus for their Summer Science
Internship Program (SSIP). This is an annual event which the school does to
expose
its second year student to research and scientific work.
The students were allowed to participate in farm and laboratory activities at Herbanext and given some introductory lectures about herbs and medicinal properties.
