ing Shi-Huang heard about a wondrous “chih” or fungus that has magical powers and is believed that gods and goddesses eat it to gain immortality. He ordered a widespread search for the herb and to gather as much of it for the palace consumption. A mariner named Hsu Fu answered the call as he went out to sea to search for this herb in remote islands. When he came back he brought with him stories and fantastic tales of palaces made of chih. These palaces were enormous and bright that its light can lit up the heavens. The chih which is the Ganoderma was told to be able to treat serious illnesses and is used to revive the dead.
